At Least 18% of Private DNA Labs Accredited by NFSTC use Starfruit.
| |||||||
| Data Unlimited International, Inc., Maryland, USA - October 16, 2003 - National Forensic Science Technology Center (NFSTC) has introduced an accreditation program in direct response to the requirement in the Introduction to the National QA Standards for DNA testing. Though Starfruit CrimeLab-DNA is for the publicly funded crime DNA labs to conform to the ASCLD-LAB accreditation program, Starfruit IdentiTrack was designed to assist private DNA labs in conforming to the accreditation requirement of NFSTC.

| Three (18%) of the seventeen accredited private DNA laboratories use Starfruit LIMS to manage their DNA testing services such as paternity, immigration, identity, sibling, no-suspect DNA, CODIS, etc. To name a few, these are BRT Laboratories, Inc. (BRT), Commonwealth Biotechnologies, Inc. (CBI) and ReliaGene Technologies, Inc.

| BRT uses Starfruit IdentiTrack for the scope of work including paternity, immigration, forensics, and sample identification. All testing analysis is conducted in an AABB, CLIA, Maryland State, and New York State approved laboratory.
To interpreting DNA, Starfruit IdentiTrack offers the calculations covering one-parent, two-parent, full-sib, half-sib, cousin, aunt-nephew, compare two children with mother, reconstruction, identity, 2-person relationship, 3-person paternity, homo/hetero/mix forensic DNA. Among the offered calculations, determination of sibship in any two persons is particularly useful for paternity testing labs to interpret genetic evidence that two persons are or are not related, when no other relatives are available for study. Simple methods using autosomal, codominant, unlinked genetic systems can determine if two people are blood relatives (e.g. siblings). Commonly encountered relationships in addition to what is listed above are parent-child, siblings, half siblings, grandparent-child, uncle-niece, cousins, and second cousins.
| |||||||
| On the other hand, DNA analysis is the greatest technical achievement for criminal investigation since the discovery of fingerprints. Methods of DNA profiling are firmly grounded in molecular technology. PCR-STR-based methods are prompt, require only a small amount of material, and generally accepted as admissible in the court system. Starfruit IdentiTrack bases on the theory of population genetics to provide generally accepted and scientifically sound calculations to interpret forensic DNA evidence. The crime scene scenarios may include victim and suspect: four-allele mixture and three-allele mixture; suspect and unknown person: four-allele mixture and three-allele mixture; two suspects: four-allele mixture; victim and/or suspect. The essence of Starfruit approach is to identify the alleles in the crime sample and the alleles carried by known contributors to the sample. | |||||||
