Data Unlimited International, Inc. (DUII), Maryland, USA –September 30, 2002– The Fourth Annual National Conference on Science and Law selected DUII’s Computer Security Methods. DUII will co-present with Baltimore City Police Department (BPD) titled ‘Computer Security Methods to Manifest Admissibility of Scientific Evidence’ in the Conference. National Conference on Science and Law, October 3-5, 2002, Marriott Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida, is sponsored by National Institute of Justice, United States Department of Justice, Criminal Justice Section, American Academy of Forensic Sciences, etc. The audience is criminal justice professionals including prosecutors, defense bar, judges, investigators, law enforcement, and forensic scientists. The conference theme is - Scientific Evidence in the Courtroom.

To prove the integrity, reliability, and validity of scientific evidence in court, identification of the analysts by signature and state certification number are required. In the paper environment, administrative and technical reviews of paper reports and supporting documentation are a tedious time consuming manual process.  Additionally, human error often results in the loss or misfiling of critical reports due to repetitive filing and refilling of these paper reports. These problems often prevent State’s Attorney from introducing and judges from admitting scientific evidence. To address these problems, crime laboratories are moving to store the vast amount of scientific evidence as electronic case records. The security methods that bind the laboratory scientist identity and the electronic records are the key to admit electronic scientific evidence.  Bindings prove the unique identity of the forensic scientist through a detailed layered process that validates the scientific evidence.  Nine security layers will be discussed: network authentication, application authentication, time-out/idle protection, MS SQL Server time stamped audit trail, data encryption, limited event-generated view-only files role-based permission assignment, correction management, and smart card identification and authorization.
