Introducing Improved Toxicology Module of Starfruit CrimeLab™ LIMS

Data Unlimited International, Inc. (DUII), Maryland, USA –August 21, 2002– DUII proudly released the improved version of the toxicology module of Starfruit CrimeLab™.  According to National Institute of Justice, 47% of the national crime laboratories are responsible for toxicology examination. While our nation faces increased case backlog caused either caused by foreign or homegrown terrorists, the improved toxicology module is aimed at computerized automation to avoid human clerical errors and technology mistakes. In return, the ultimate goal is to eliminate the case backlog.

The key improvement includes enabling the crime laboratories to accept evidence submission and requests for examination electronically either from remote law enforcement agencies such as police officers or from medical examiners' offices, and expediting disseminating reports electronically.  With electronic submission to start the chain of custody, the toxicology module will compile the electronic protocols and forms depending upon the requested examinations to present to the assigned toxicologists to record test results.  For example, if the submitters request Urine Drug Screen, the toxicology module will not present Blood Alcohol protocols and worksheets. This is to avoid the technical errors. The test samples may be batched to upload to the instrument computers such as GC/MS, and the test results may be batched to download data after the instrumentation completes. This automation prevents human clerical typing errors.

The toxicology module compiles the test results, case notes, and any casework observation into read-only Portable Document File (PDF) to distribute. It only takes less than two minutes to reach the electronic recipients after the case is approved assuming the wide area network successfully operates.
